Layers palette

Use following keyboard shortcuts when you work in the Layers palette in Photoshop Elements:

  1. To open or close the Layers palette, click F11.
  2. To select a layer (make it the current layer), click the Layer thumbnail in the Layers palette.
  3. To create a new layer above the current layer, press Ctrl+Shift+N or click the New Layer icon.
  4. To create a new layer below the current layer, press Ctrl and click the New Layer icon.
  5. To rename a layer, double-click the layer's name, then enter a new name in the highlighted box.
  6. To select the contents on the current layer, press Ctrl and click the layer thumbnail.
  7. To copy all the contents of the current layer to a new layer, press Ctrl+J.
  8. To copy only part of the current layer to a new layer, select the area you want to copy, then press Ctrl+J.
  9. To hide a layer, click the eye icon to the left of the layer thumbnail. The eye icon disappears. To show a hidden layer, click the blank box to the left of the layer thumbnail.
  10. To hide all layers except the active layer, click-and-hold Alt, then click the eye icon to the left of the active layer's thumbnail. To show all layers again, repeat.
  11. To group a layer with the previous layer, press Ctrl+G. This creates a clipping group. To ungroup layers, press Ctrl+Shift+G.
